I am going for a custody hearing, what can I expect?
(We are in Washington state)My first major issue is that I am young. I am 20 and their mother is 18. I know this happens everyday in the US but I've never talked to anybody who's been through this at this age.I am petitioning for primary custody of my twin daughters who are now 8 months old. I am nervous because I really want this, however my lawyer even told me "To be honest, it will be very hard for you to get primary custody of these children."We were married for about a 6 month period of time, at which point we got a legal separation. At that time I agreed to pay child support but it also said I was entitled to 6 hours of visitation a week, which she is refusing to give me.How does means of supporting the child come into play? I am a registered nursed, with an associates degree, and I do feel I make enough to support them... maybe not give them everything they want, but enough to keep them healthy. Their mom works at a daycare and makes about $9 an hour. She is not financially independent, and relies on her grandparents to support her and they end up paying most of her bills. Would that show I am "more fit" to support them? Would that help my case? Also, the mother has a DWI on her record from last year, would that also help me? Or is that insignificant? I know that there is frequent drug use going on in the mothers home (I have witnesses that will confirm she has used LSD and Marijuana while caring for the children) Can I use this to try and prove she is an unfit mother?I know that fathers rarely get custody, but do you think under these circumstances I have a chance?

Custody Exchanges

It is not that uncommon to read the headline "Custody Exchange Turns Violent". Everyday parents all over are faced with the issues and stress related making parenting time or custody exchanges with their co-parent. For most families, these exchanges happen all the time without any major issues. However, for a small percentage of the population, these exchanges can erupt to the point where law enforcement becomes involved.

Make 2010 the year for family.

Every year people setup resolutions to help improve themselves.? Let's make 2010 the year that we return to family.? It is very easy to forget how important and amazing a family can be, but, like anything, you will get out what you put in.

"Girls Night Out" or "Guys Night" have always been popular, but how about bringing back "Family Night".?? Try to set aside a night that you can spend with your loved ones to do something, also try to do something that doesn't involve the TV.?? It may be a card tournament or a board game or maybe its skiing or ice skating, but get involved in something with your family.? Maybe even get the extended family involved.

Depending on where you live attorney's fees can range from $100 — $1,500 an hour, but the average rate is somewhere in the neighborhood of $250 — $350 an hour. That being said, the biggest contributor to an expensive divorce is extra spent by your professionals doing what you could have done yourself.

Are child custody evaluations helpful?? Most parents figure out custody and co-parenting out on their own. Unfortunately, there are situations where one party is extremely difficult or there are extraordinary issues that prohibit the cooperative process. In these regrettable situations, a third party (often a psychologist) is the only solution to help the divorcing or co-parenting parents come to an agreement. The prevailing custody standard is "in the best interest of the child."
